Why UPI Makes Micropayments to Developers Finally Viable in India

In 2020, if you wanted to pay 10,000 developers ₹0.52 each, you had a problem. Bank NEFT transfers have a minimum fee of ₹1–5 per transaction. At 10,000 transactions, that's ₹10,000–50,000 in fees just to distribute ₹5,200 in earnings. The economics were impossible.

UPI changed this entirely.

The micropayment problem

Ad revenue per impression is inherently small. A CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) of ₹800 means ₹0.80 per impression to the platform and ₹0.52 to the developer. Multiplied across thousands of developers earning daily, you need to process hundreds of thousands of small transactions every month.

Traditional payment rails make this economically infeasible. NEFT minimum fees, Razorpay's per-transaction charges, and international wire fees all eat into margins that barely exist at ₹0.52 per impression.

UPI's zero marginal cost architecture

UPI transactions in India have effectively zero cost for the sender and recipient. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) subsidises the infrastructure. Banks and payment apps absorb the thin margins. For WaitJI AI, this means we can batch developer payouts weekly and send ₹100–500 transfers to hundreds of developers with negligible transaction cost.

A ₹100 UPI payout to a developer costs QivaLabs LLP the same as a ₹10,000 payout. The micropayment infrastructure is effectively free.

The UPI ID as developer identity

A UPI ID (yourname@okaxis, developer@ybl, etc.) serves double duty in WaitJI AI's system. It is both the payment destination and a verification signal. Every Indian developer with a bank account has a UPI ID. The penetration rate among tech-savvy developers is effectively 100%.

This means WaitJI AI does not need to collect bank account numbers for most payouts — a simpler, lower-risk user experience. For developers who prefer bank transfers, we support NEFT as well, with bank account numbers stored encrypted.

The minimum ₹100 threshold

WaitJI AI's minimum withdrawal is ₹100 — chosen carefully. Below ₹100, the operational cost of processing and verifying a withdrawal request (admin time, Cashfree API calls, email notifications) approaches or exceeds the payout value. At ₹100, the economics work for both sides. Most developers reach ₹100 within 8–12 days of consistent Claude Code usage.

International developers

UPI is India-only. For the growing number of international developers using WaitJI AI, we currently hold earnings until we add Wise or Stripe payouts — targeted for Q4 2026. If you're outside India and want to be notified when international payouts launch, reply to the welcome email with your country.
